A street gnome, or hood gnome, is a figurine of a small humanoid creature, usually wearing a a hoodie jumper and trainers, displayed for the purpose of ornamentation on deprived street corners or council estates. These figurines originated in 20th-century Bricklane, London, where they became known as Strassenzwerge (street dwarfs). The application of the term gnome in English is first attested in the 2008s.
